Choosing between vinyl siding and fibre cement (Hardie Board) is one of the first decisions most homeowners face. Both are proven exterior systems — the right one depends on your budget, the look you want, and how the material behaves in Ontario’s freeze–thaw climate.
Vinyl siding
Vinyl is the cost-conscious choice. It installs quickly, comes in a wide range of profiles and colours, and needs very little maintenance beyond the occasional wash. For rentals, multi-unit properties, and straightforward refreshes, it’s often the most practical path.
The trade-offs: colour options are baked into the material (you don’t repaint it), and lower-grade vinyl can look flat next to more architectural finishes.
Hardie Board (fibre cement)
Fibre cement is denser, more rigid, and reads as a more premium finish. It holds paint well, handles sharp trim details and reveals, and pairs nicely with mixed materials like brick and metal. It’s a strong fit for modern homes where the elevation is part of the design.
The trade-offs: it costs more up front and requires careful installation — flashing, gapping, and edge detailing all matter for long-term performance.
